Vietnam Wins UN Security Council Seat
Vietnam, along with Libya and Burkina Faso, was elected to a nonpermanent seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2008-09 on Tuesday.
The three countries were unopposed and obtained the required two-thirds majority of votes in favor from the 192-member UN General Assembly.
Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said Vietnam “will give its utmost as a nonpermanent member of the UN Security Council (UNSC)” in an interview with the Vietnam News Agency.
“Becoming a member of the most important agency of the largest global organization is a great honor but also bears weighty responsibilities,” he said.
“Vietnam will strictly follow the UN Charter, UN guidelines and international laws as well as closely cooperate with other UNSC members in order to make timely and appropriate decisions that serve the legitimate benefits of UN member countries.
”Dung said Vietnam would support and contribute to efforts for peace, arms proliferation and the fight against terrorism.
“We are also completing preparations to effectively participate in UN peace-keeping missions,” Dung added.
