US House Speaker to Visit Vietnam

US House speaker Dennis Hastert will visit Vietnam from 14 to 17 this month, becoming the most senior congressman to Vietnam since the two countries established diplomatic relation a decade ago.
President of the US House of Representatives Dennis Hastert will lead a delegation comprising representatives and senators to Vietnam at the invitation of Nguyen Van An, chairman of Vietnam’s unicameral legislature National Assembly.

The house agenda includes meeting with Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, chairman Nguyen Van An, and other senior officials.

Highlands Gong Festival Marks World Heritage Recognition

A cong chieng (gong) festival kicked off in Gia Lai province Tuesday evening to formally receive UNESCO’s certification recognizing Vietnam’s Central Highland gong culture as an intangible cultural heritage.

Many country’s leaders, including President Tran Duc Luong, attended the opening ceremony.

Ha Long City Welcomes 315,000 Visitors

Ha Long city in north-eastern Quang Ninh province welcomed more than 315,000 tourists in the first quarter of this year, a 24% year on year increase, earning a turnover of VND 225 billion, according to the city's Trade and Tourism Service.3_4halongbay.jpg

Foreign visitors alone increased by 13% to more than 242,000 in the first quarter, the service added.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates will visit Viet Nam in April at the invitation of Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

His two-day visit is expected to begin on April 21, a Microsoft Viet Nam official says.

Gates is a co-founder of the world’s largest software group and ranked first on Forbes magazine’s list of the richest people in the US, with assets worth 51 billion USD.

Vietnam Wraps Up WTO Entry Talks With Canada

Vietnam’s Ministry of Science and Technology issued Monday a statute regulating the administration and activities of a newly-established agency on issues concerning WTO standardization and technical barriers.
Under the statute, the Inter-ministerial Committee on Technical Barriers is responsible for counseling the science and technology ministry on measures to ensure conformity to the WTO (World Trade Organization) agreement on technical barriers to trade (TBT agreement).

Vietnamese and US officials met Monday to discuss the launch of the Global Trade and Investment Management (GTIM) network in Vietnam, easing local business access to the global economy.
The network, a business promotion instrument that will provide information for global trade and investment, will be first launched in the central Vietnam city of Da Nang.
