Foreign journalists make field trip to Muong Nhe

(VNA)  Foreign and domestic reporters have made a field trip to the northwestern province of Dien Bien to inquire into the facts of the case related to social disorder in its border district of Muong Nhe as reported by the press earlier this month.

On May 29, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs held a press conference regarding the May 26 incident in which a Chinese marine surveillance vessel cut the exploration cables of Binh Minh 02 seismic vessel of Viet Nam National Oil and Gas Group (PVN) while it was conducting seismic survey in the continental shelf of Viet Nam. The Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Nguyen Phuong Nga made the following statement:

Chinese marine surveillance ships violate VN’s sovereignty

(VNA) Chinese marine surveillance vessels on May 26 violated the sovereignty of Vietnam's territorial waters, causing economic damage and hindering the operations of the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam).

This information was given by PetroVietnam Deputy General Director Do Van Hau while granting an interview to the press in Hanoi on May 27.

EU official changes attitude to VN tra fish

(VNA)Struan Stevenson, Senior Vice President of the European Parliament’s Fisheries Committee, has changed his mind for imports of Vietnamese pangasius fish after his visit to Vietnam from May 13-23, 2011.

“Until recently, I was an arch critic of panga fish production, but having seen production methods first-hand and learned more about this highly regulated market, I am ready to admit that my previous comments were misplaced,” Stevenson wrote on his website at www.struanstevenson.com.

VN earns massive export turnover in five months

(VNA) Vietnam’s export turnover in the first five months of this year reached more than 34.7 billion USD, representing a year-on-year rise of 32.8 percent, the Ministry of Industry and Trade said on May 26.

During this period, garment exports topped the list of hard currency earners with over 5.1 billion USD, a rise of 35.6 percent year-on-year. The United States remained Vietnam’s largest importer, followed by the European Union and Japan.

US firm to develop hotel-casino in Vietnam

(VNA) Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. has announced it would invest 95 million USD to acquire a 26 percent stake in a resort development project in Vietnam where it would build a hotel-casino.

Pinnacle's May 26 statement wrote, the Ho Tram Strip project, being developed by a Canadian company, Asian Coast Development, is beachfront complex of destination resorts and residential developments in southern Ba Ria - Vung Tau province, approximately 80 miles southeast of Ho Chi Minh City.

UN recognises Vietnam’s productive expansion

(VNA) The UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) has recognised Vietnam ’s successful expansion of productive capacity as going beyond global average levels.

ESCAP said at an annual meeting in Bangkok , Thailand , from May 19-25, that Vietnam was one of the four regional countries most successful in diversifying export-oriented products and expanding market share for a number of products during the past two decades.

Vietnam explains MIA work to foreign attaches

(VNA) Vietnam’s experiences and the results of searching for the remains of missing foreign servicemen during the war in Vietnam were introduced to foreign military attaches in the country at a meeting in Hanoi on May 25.

At the meeting, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Persons (VNOSMP) Colonel Dao Xuan Kinh briefed the participants on a number of measures taken by Vietnam and the US in the search for servicemen missing in action (MIA).

General elections wind up in success

(VNA) The elections of deputies to the 13th National Assembly and People’s Councils at all levels for the 2011-2016 term had finished in all cities and provinces nationwide by the midnight of May 22.

Preliminary statistics showed that the northern mountainous provinces of Lai Chau, Ha Giang, Hoa Binh and Lang Son have led the country in terms of the rates of voters going to the polls, with 99.99 percent, said the Election Council.
