Lang Co resort opened to tourists


March 26 (VNA) -- The Lang Co resort, in the foothills of the Hai Van Pass, about 50 km south of the ancient city of Hue, was officially opened on March 25.

The owners of the new four-star resort in central Thua Thien-Hue province hope it will encourage tourists to spend more time in the region.

In addition to its 60 guest rooms, the resort, built on four hectares adjacent to the Lang Co's fine beaches, includes sports facilities, swimming pools and a restaurant.

Vietnam to boost regional air transportation



Ha Noi, March 26 (VNA)-- Officials from the national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines have discussed with their neighbouring counterparts ways to increase civil aviation cooperation, particularly regional air transportation.

In an annual meeting held in Phnom Penh recently, aviation officials from Viet Nam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand signed a memorandum of understanding, MoU, which underlined closer regional cooperation to enable their airlines to operate more effectively.

Gia Rai improves education conditions



Ha Noi, March 25 (VNA) -- Central highland Gia Lai province has over recent years increased its budget allocation to build houses for school teachers in remote and mountainous areas to help improve their living conditions.

In 2000 and early 2001, the province has invested about VND 4 billion, more than USD 300,000, to build thousands of square metres of housing for teachers who are working in isolated and highland hamlets and communes.

Fruit and vegetable exports increase



Ha Noi, March 24 (VNA) -- Viet Nam will strive to earn USD 1.85 billion from the export of fruit and vegetables in 2010, a yearly increase of 20.4 percent or nine times higher than 2000.

To reach the goal, an amount of USD 1,149 million will be invested in the fruit-and-vegetable sector during the next decade.

Of this, USD 770 million will be spent on production, USD 125 million on packaging and preservation, and USD 60 million on nurseries, species, training, research and price subsidy.

25 major transport projects in 2001



Ha Noi, March 24 (VNA) -- The Transport and Communication Ministry plans to start 25 major transport projects this year at an estimated cost of VND 8,512 billion, USD 608 million.

Almost all the work will be in northern-mountainous, Central Highlands, central-coastal and Mekong Delta provinces.

This year's schedule is within the Ministry's programme to build 160 transport and communication infrastructure facilities at a cost of VND 63,000 billion, USD 4,500 million between 2001-2005.

Fisheries sector 's plan in next five years


Ha Noi, March 24 (VNA) -- The fisheries sector is trying for 2.45 million tonnes of aquatic produce and export turnover of USD 2.5 billion in the next five years.

Of the output, 1.4 million tonnes will come from the natural catch and the rest from aquaculture.

The sector intends mobilizing VND 5,038 billion, about USD 359 million, for its aquatic produce exploitation programmes between now and 2005.

Resolution of 11th Plenum, second phase

Second phase of 11 Plenum concluded successfully




Ha Noi, March 24 (VNA) -- General Secretary of the Viet Nam Communist Party Central Committee Le Kha Phieu said the 10-day working meeting of the committee's 11th plenum, second phase, had fulfilled its agenda.

This was to continue the assessment and completion of the draft documents and list of candidates to be submitted to next month's ninth National Party Congress.

Ha Noi, March 24 (VNA) -- Ideology and Culture Commission Chairman Huu Tho says the majority of Viet Nam Communist Party's new Central Committee members to be elected by the coming ninth National Party Congress should be younger than 60 to reflect the Party's efforts to rejuvenate its highest-level leadership.

Mr.Huu Tho, who is also a member of the Party Central Committee, said the just-ended 11th plenum, second phase, of the Central Committee emphasised on the introduction of candidates for the new Central Committee.
