U.N. praises Viet Nam's social achievements

Ha Noi, Dec. 17 (VNA) -- Viet Nam has been leading the developing world in cutting poverty rates with the rate down to some 32 percent in recent years from more than 60 per cent in 1990, well ahead of the global schedule for achievement by 2015, says a United Nations report.

Overseas Vietnamese remit more than USD 2 billion in 2002

Ha noi, Dec. 17 (VNA) -- Overseas Vietnamese has so far this year remitted nearly 2.1 billion USD to their relatives at home, a 17.5 percent year-on-year increase, according to the State Bank of Viet Nam (SBV).

Ho Chi Minh City alone has received an estimated 1 billion USD remitted by overseas Vietnamese to their relatives. Particularly, the city saw sharp increases of 28-29 percent in October and November in comparison with September.

Donors pledge US$ 2.5 billion for Viet Nam

Ha Noi, Dec. 11 (VNA) -- The donors' community has pledged a total aid of 2.5 billion USD for Viet Nam in 2003, an increase of 4.5 percent over 2002.

This was revealed by Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc with the press after the 10th Consultative Group Meeting closed in Ha Noi today.

"Leading donors include Japan, the World Bank, the European Union, and the Asia Development Bank," he added.

Viet Nam delivering on its promise, say WB and ADB

Ha Noi, Dec. 11 (VNA) -- Viet Nam is determined to overcome obstacles to use external capital sources more effectively in its national industrialisation and modernisation, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai affirmed.

PM Khai assured heads of 47 delegations from foreign countries, international organisations, governmental and non-governmental organisations to the Consultative Group Meeting in Ha Noi on Dec. 11.

Viet Nam Airlines plans more flights during Tet

Ha Noi, Dec. 12 (VNA) -- The national flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, plans to add more flights on international and domestic air routes during "Tet", the traditional Lunar New Year, which falls on Feb. 1 of 2003.

The extra flights will be conducted from Jan. 1 to Feb. 28 next year, a month before and after "Tet".

Foreign investors to expand operations in Viet Nam

Ha Noi, Dec. 12 (VNA) -- Eighty percent of 124 respondents of a poll of business sentiment said that they planned to expand company operations in Viet Nam in the next three years because of the country's positive long-term outlook, a growing local market and political stability.

The poll was conducted by a forum of business leaders, international donors and government officials ahead of the annual Consultative Group Meeting held in Ha Noi on Dec. 10-11.

Viet Nam strives to help disabled people integrate into society

Ha Noi, Dec. 12 (VNA) -- Viet Nam has been striving to help disabled people to really integrate into society by removing any barriers to them, including prejudices.

Currently, Viet Nam has more than 5 million orphans and people with disabilities, accounting for seven percent of the country's 80-million population.

HA NOI (December 6) — The Vietnamese Government is working harder to further liberalise its economy to overcome problems private businesses have faced in getting their operations off the ground, a private business meeting was told on Thursday in Ha Noi.

Policy makers at the meeting pledged to work towards speedier reforms for a more competitive, broader-based private sector to cater to local and export markets.
