World Bank’s global update report issued in Vietnamese



HA NOI — The World Bank has launched the Vietnamese language version of its major publication, the World Development Report 2004, at the same time as the English version for the first time.

World Bank Viet Nam director, Klaus Rohland, said the Vietnamese version had been released with the English version to allow local policy makers and the public timely participation in the global debate on development issues.

People with disabilities hope for better deal



HA NOI — Physically challenged people in Viet Nam have set up their own business association to protect their rights and push for the Government and business community to help provide vocational training and jobs for them.

The Viet Nam Association of Business Enterprises of Persons with Disabilities held its first congress in Ha Noi last Thursday, with 130 delegates representing more than 400 businesses of the disabled.

VN is ready to cope with any new SARS outbreak: institute



HA NOI — Viet Nam is on SARS red alert after Singapore on Wednesday confirmed its first positive case of the deadly virus since the outbreak was declared over July.

"It’s possible that SARS could return but I personally think Viet Nam is not among the high-risk countries," said National Hygiene and Epidemiology Institute deputy director, Pham Ngoc Dinh.

Vietnam welcomes positive moves in Iraq


HA NOI — Viet Nam thought the establishment of Iraq’s provisional Governing Council and Cabinet is a step toward establishing a government chosen by the country’s people, Foreign Ministry spokesman Le Dung said on Thursday.

It was hoped the Iraqi people would soon vote for a government in conformity with their aspiration and their right to self-determination, he said while answering questions from a Viet Nam News Agency correspondent. Viet Nam respected Iraq’s independence and sovereignty and its people’s right to self-determination, he said.

One-door rules now apply across country



HA NOI — Regulations for one-door administrative management, already tested in some cities and provinces, have been approved for use throughout Viet Nam by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai.

The regulations – to become effective in 15 days from their publication – are designed to: Reduce cumbersome procedures; Combat corruption and any authoritarian attitudes among State officials and employees; and Further improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the country’s administrative system.

Grip loosens on dong loans to SMEs



HA NOI — The State Bank of Viet Nam will loosen regulations which restrict the use of Vietnamese dong by foreign banks to give small-and-medium-sized firms a better chance of obtaining loans, the bank’s governor Le Duc Thuy said last Sunday.

"The loosening will create competition on the credit market so that banking services will be improved," Thuy told young entrepreneurs getting Vietnamese golden star awards at a meeting in Ha Noi last weekend.
