VIET NAM STRIVES FOR DRUG-FREE ASEAN


Oct. 14 (VNA) -- Viet Nam, a member of SEAN and current President of ASEAN, would do its best to make positive contributions to together with other ASEAN member countries obtain the goal of a drug-free ASEAN in 2015.

So said Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem at the International Congress entitled "In Pursuit of Drug Free ASEAN 2015" in Bangkok, Thailand, from Oct. 11-13.

Cooperation with world community for child care and protection


Oct. 13 (VNA) -- Viet Nam gives high priority to child care and protection, affirmed a Vietnamese representative to the United Nations at the UN's Third Committee discussion on promoting and protecting the rights of children in New York.

The Vietnamese representative spoke of the Vietnamese Government's efforts to implement a policy for socio-economic development and political stability, which gives high priority to child care and protection.

Measures to restore agricultural production in Mecong delta


The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on October 13 organised a meeting in Ho Chi Minh City to discuss measures to restore agricultural production after floods in the Mekong delta provinces.

Representatives of the Ministry of Planning and Investment; the Finance Ministry; the Government Office; relevant agencies, institutes, companies and the Departments of Agriculture and Rural development of flood hit provinces in the Mekong delta participated in the meeting.

MFA Spokesperson on Middle East violence


Ha Noi, Oct. 13 (VNA) -- The spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Viet Nam's support for the Palestinian people's just struggle for an independent State of Palestine and a peaceful solution to the Palestine question.

In response to a question raised by an AFP correspondent about the increasing violence in the Middle East, the spokesperson said:

"Viet Nam was deeply worried about the escalation of violence in the Middle East.

Vietnam hosts ASEAN Senior Official Meeting


Ha Noi, Oct. 13 (VNA) -- Viet Nam hosted the ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting (ASEAN-SOM) at deputy-ministerial level in Ha Noi on Oct. 12 and 13, the first meeting in its capacity as President of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Standing Committee. The meeting was chaired by Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister Nguyen Tam Chien.

The meeting discussed measures to implement agreements reached at the 33rd Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers in Bangkok in July 2000 and the annual meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers in New York in September this year.

Trans-Asia Railway will run through Vietnam



Ha Noi, Oct. 14 (VNA) -- ASEAN transport ministers have given the green light to a USD 2.5 billion rail link running through Viet Nam and Cambodia. The rail link, the Trans-Asia Railway Project, will link seven ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) countries with China.

Vietnam-EU to increase garment export quota



Oct. 13 (VNA) -- Viet Nam and the European Union (EU) signed an agreement on Oct. 10 at the EU headquarters in Brussels, Belgium, allowing an average increase of 26 percent on Viet Nam's garment exports quota to EU markets.

Signatories were Vietnamese Trade Minister Vu Khoan and EU Commissioner in charge of trade Pascal Lamy, who also signed a memorandum of understanding on fraud prevention in the footwear industry.

ASEAN-China working group on code of conduct meets in Hanoi


Ha Noi, Oct. 12 (VNA) -- The third meeting of the ASEAN-China Working Group on a Code of Conduct for the East Sea was held in Ha Noi on Oct. 11 under the co-chairmanship of Viet Nam and China.

Participants in the meeting continued exchanging views on a number of issues relating to the draft Code of Conduct (COC) and obtained some initial results. They agreed to make further efforts to perfect the COC for early approval.

UN assesses flood situation in Mekong Delta area



A United Nations Disaster Assessment and Co-ordination (UNDAC) team held a press conference in Hanoi on October 10 to announce briefly the team's assessment on the flood situation in the Mekong delta.
