Vietnam and The United States Reach in Principle Trade Agreement

Today (July 25, 1999), negotiators from the US and Vietnam have arrived at an agreement in principle on the terms of a Bilateral Trade Agreement. The Agreement addresses issues concerning trade in goods and services, protection of intellectual property, and investment relations between the two countries. The two sides will now work to finalize the technical details in order to submit a formal agreement to their governments and competent bodies to approve. Enactment of the Agreement would mark a major step in the normalization of economic relations between the two countries.

Vietnam's Population is 76.3 Million

VNA Ha Noi, July 23 -- Vietnam's population at 00.00 hr, April 1, 1999, was 76.3 million, announced the General Statistics Office (GSO) at a news briefing on the initial results of the National Population and Housing Census in Ha Noi today, July 23.

Males were 49.2 percent, and females, 50.8 percent, said GSO Director Le Van Toan, who is also deputy head of the National Committee for the Population and Housing Census. He added that the urban population was 23.5 percent, and the rural population, 76.5 percent.

Vietnam's position on Taiwan issue

On 17 July 1999, answering Xinhua News Agency correspondent's question about the recent announcement by Mr. Lee Teng-hui that Taiwan abandoned one China policy, the foreign ministry spokeswoman said:

Answer: Vietnam's position on Taiwan issue has been clearly stated on many occasions: Vietnam recognizes the Government of the People's Republic of China as the sole legitimate representative of the whole China; Taiwan is inseparable territory part of China.

Party General Secretary's Activities in Cuba

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee Le Kha Phieu toured the ancient quarter of Havana, during the second day, July 9, of his current eight-day official visit to Cuba.

Havana's ancient quarter is a historical and cultural site listed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) as a world culture heritage.

Phieu was accompanied by Abel Prieto, Politburo member of the Communist Party of Cuba Central Committee (CPC CC) and Minister of Culture.

Vietnam, Cuba Issue Joint Declaration

VNA July 16, 99 - Vietnam and Cuba issued a joint declaration on July 14 at the end of an official visit by General Secretary Le Kha Phieu of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee.

Foreign Visitors Up 7%

Nhandan July 14, 1999 - The number of foreign tourists to Vietnam in the first half of 1999 increased at the rate of 7% in comparison with the first six months of last year, reaching 54% of the annual target, according to statistics released by the General Department of Tourism. The number of domestic tourists occupied only 44% of the annual target.

Localities with large foreign tourist arrivals are Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Quang Ninh, Thua Thien Hue, Hai Phong, Can Tho, Khanh Hoa, Ha Tay.

732 projects in Industrial Zones so far

Nhandan July 12, 1999 - Industrial Zones in Vietnam have so far attracted 732 projects with a total investment capital of over US $6.8 billion according to the Management Board of Vietnam

Investment for Trans-Vietnam Railway

VNA July 12, 1999 - The railway service has so far attracted four foreign-invested projects on upgrading bridges, signal system and tunnels of the trans-Vietnam railway.

Japanese investors have involved in a project worth nearly JPY 5.5 billion (US $43.6 million) to upgrade eight bridges. Upgrade of the bridges including the Da Rang bridge, 1,603 metres long, in Phu Yen province, the biggest on the trans-Vietnam route, started early this year and is expected to be completed next year.

First Gas Factory in Vietnam

Nhan dan July 12, 99 - An inaugural ceremony of the Dinh Co Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Factory in Long Hai, Vung Tau has just been held by the Gas Products Processing and Trading Company under the Vietnam Oil and Gas Corporation. The factory has a full capacity of 340,000 tonnes per year.

55 More Rep Offices in HCM City

Nhan dan July 10, 99 - There are 55 more new foreign representative offices in Ho Chi Minh City in the first half of 1999.

11 of these are from Singapore, 7 from Taiwan, 6 from Hong Kong and Republic of Korea, 5 from Japan and 4 from USA and France.

There are 1,342 foreign representative offices in Ho Chi Minh City to date. These offices employ about 5,000 Vietnamese people and 2,241 expatriates.
