FM Nguyen Dy Nien meets Russian, U.S, Chilean, Peru FMs


Ha Noi, Oct. 22 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien has met on separate occasions with Russian FM Igor Ivanov, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, Chilian FM Maria Valenzuela, and Peruvian FM Diego Garcia Sayan in Shanghai on the sidelines of the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Ministerial Meeting and the APEC Economic Leaders Meeting.

Law breaker in Hue city sentenced to 15 years


The People's Court in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue handed down a 15-year imprisonment sentence to Nguyen Van Ly on October 19.

Ly was publicly tried for "defying the probation decision by the competent State agency" and "undermining the unity policy" in pursuance to Article 269 and Article 87 of the Criminal Code of Vietnam.

Vietnam, China to enhance comprehensive ties


Vietnam and China will strengthen comprehensive bilateral co-operation, affirmed Vietnamese Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and Chinese President Jiang Zemin during their meeting in Shanghai on October 19.

Mr Khai arrived in Shanghai the same day to attend the ninth APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation) Economic Leaders Meeting on October 20 and 21.

Legend of Ho Chi Minh sea rout


Ha Noi, Oct. 22 (VNA) -- Forty years ago on Oct. 23, 1961, the Party and President Ho Chi Minh made a decision on establishing the military sea transportation force which opened a sea route to ferry soldiers and supplies to the southern battle front during the American war.

Since then, Oct. 23 has been observed as the traditional day of the legendary Ho Chi Minh Sea Route.

FM Spokeswoman on Russia's withdrawal from Cam Ranh


Ha Noi, Oct. 18 (VNA) -- Russia's decision to begin withdrawing from Cam Ranh port in January 2002 is in keeping with the agreement reached between the two countries, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, Phan Thuy Thanh, said in Ha Noi on Oct. 18.

Answering foreign correspondents' questions regarding Viet Nam's reaction to Russia's withdrawal, the spokesperson said: "We are confident that the traditional relations and multi-form cooperation between Viet Nam and the Russian Federation as two strategic partners will be further boosted".

Vietnam is considered the safest place in Asia-Pacific

Ha Noi, Oct. 18 (VNA) -- Viet Nam is now considered a safer place than anywhere else in the region, according to a survey by the Political & Economic Risk Consultancy (PERC).

The Hong Kong-based PERC said on Oct. 17 that the sense of security that was evident before the terrorists struck the United States in relatively prosperous ecomonies in the Asia-Pacific region has vaporised.

The survey found that confidence in Australia and Japan had fallen sharply since the Sept. 11 air attacks on the U.S.

Customs procedures streamlined at Sai Gon & Hai Phong ports


Ha Noi, Oct. 17 (VNA) -- Exports and importers are breathing a sigh of relief as officials start to streamline a host of cumbersome administrative requirements for customs.

Some 17 steps in the customs process will be cut to just five under the new rules.

All export goods will be checked at the border gate, not on commercial premises - in a bid to eradicate the potential for bribes.

No suspected terrorist's accounts detected in Vietnam so far

Ha Noi, Oct. 17 (VNA) -- No clients among the 27 listed terrorist organisations and individuals being searched for have been detected in Viet Nam, deputy head of the International Cooperation Department of the State Bank of Viet Nam (SBV) Do Khac Hung told Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper on Oct. 16.

The SBV has requested commercial banks in Viet Nam to review their client records to identify accounts suspected lof belonging to terrorist organisations and individuals.

Vietnam pledges to contribute more to UNESCO's activities

Ha Noi, Oct. 17 (VNA) -- Viet Nam is willing to join other countries in contributing more to the action programmes of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), said Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem at the organisation's 31st session in Paris, France, on Oct. 16.

Trade Minister Vu Khoan on results of PM's visits to Europe


Ha Noi, Oct. 17 (VNA) -- There is every reason now to say that the recent tour of Spain, Germany and the Netherlands by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai has been a success, said Trade Minister Vu Khoan.

He further said that the tour succeeded, both bilaterally and multilaterally, laying the foundation for long-term cooperation and contributing to raising Viet Nam's position in the international arena.
