President Tran Duc Luong winds up China visit




Dec. 29 (VNA) -- President Tran Duc Luong has described his China visit as the successful materialisation of agreements signed by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Viet Nam (CPV), Le Kha Phieu, and General Secretary of the Communist Party and President of China, Jiang Zemin, in February 1999.

President Luong was speaking before leaving Xiamen, Fujian Province, this afternoon (Dec. 29), to end his five-day official visit to China.

FDI in Vietnam in 2000



Ha Noi, Dec. 30 (VNA) -- Viet Nam has so far this year licensed 303 foreign-invested projects, with a total capital of more than USD 1.9 billion. Besides, enterprises in operation have added USD 268.9 million to their investment capital.

This brings the country's foreign-invested projects to 2,601 with a combined valid capital of USD 35.47 billion.

Government' year-end meeting




Ha Noi, Dec. 27 (VNA) -- The Government held its regular year-end meeting in Ha Noi on Dec. 27 to review implementation of socio-economic development tasks in December and the year and define major socio-economic development tasks for the first quarter of next year.

The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and his deputies Nguyen Tan Dzung, Nguyen Manh Cam and Pham Gia Khiem.

Ha Noi, Dec. 27 (VNA) -- President Tran Duc Luong arrived in Shanghai today, Dec. 27, continuing his official visit to China.

He was warmly welcomed by the leaders and people of Shanghai who considered the Vietnamese President's visit an honour.

Stock market in Vietnam


Dec. 27 (VNA) -- The State Securities Commission's Ho Chi Minh City representative Bui Nguyen Hoan proposes that irregularities at the city's stock-trading centre be eliminated before the opening of a Ha Noi bourse.

Hoan says Viet Nam's infant stock market offers many potential opportunities for retrieval at low risks if the irregularities can be eliminated. Foreign buyers have yet to properly engage in a market that involves just USD 20 million worth of listed stock shares.

Export turnover of 14,3 billion USD in 2000





Ha Noi, Dec. 27 (VNA) -- Viet Nam earned record export turnover of USD 14.3 billion in 2000, a year-on-year increase of 24 percent.

Foreign-invested enterprises produced almost half of the turnover, more than USD 6.9 billion, including USD 3.58 billion from exports of crude oil. Domestically-invested enterprises earned USD 7.4 billion from exports.

Vietnamese President's visit to China is successful



Ha Noi, Dec. 27 (VNA) -- Vietnamese President Tran Duc Luong's official visit to China has been a success, Assistant to the Foreign Minister of China Wang Yi said in an interview with the Viet Nam News Agency (VNA) correspondent in Beijing on Dec. 26.

He said the visit took place at a time when the new millennium is approaching and at the turn of a new century. It also occured at a time when ties between the Parties and States of China and Viet Nam witnessed a new trend of development.

Vietnam, China sign Joint Statement for comprehensive cooperation



Dec. 25 (VNA) -- Viet Nam and China signed a joint statement for comprehensive cooperation in the new century in Beijing today, Dec. 25.

Signatories were Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien for Viet Nam and Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan for the China.

The joint statement, signed during the five-day visit to China by Viet Nam's President Tran Duc Luong, says:

Vietnam named on maritime "White list" of IMO




Dec. 25 (VNA) -- Viet Nam has been named on the first "White List" of countries meeting the compentancy requirements of a new international convention for seafarers and technological development issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The list includes 71 countries and one associate IMO member deemed to have properly implement the provisions of the International Convention for Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW).
