US World vision invests in developing poor mountainous areas



Ha Noi, Dec. 13 (VNA) -- The World Vision, a non-governmental organization of the US, has invested more than USD 168,000 since 1999 in a project to develop agro-forestry production, health care and human resources in Quang Hoa mountainous district of Thanh Hoa central province.

Hanoi Education delegation attends seminar sponsored by IBM



Dec. 12 (VNA) -- A delegation of the Ha Noi Education Service led by Director Nguyen Kim Hoan attended a global seminar on educational re-creation in New York on Dec. 11 and 12.

The seminar, which was organized the International Business Machines (IBM), a leading computer company in the United States, drew 200 delegates from 21 States of the U.S. and seven other countries.

The OXFAM US has granted US 2,1 million for afforestation




Dec. 9 (VNA) -- The OXFAM US has granted VND 30 billion (USD 2.1 million) for planting 2,000 ha of cajeput in the Plain of Reeds (Dong Thap Muoi) in the southern province of Tien Giang.

In the first period of the project, local farmers will be granted funds to plant 120 ha of cajeput with an investment of VND 8 million per ha. At the same time, they will also benefit from a short-term credit programme to expand animal breeding, aquaculture and subsidiary food crops with an investment of VND 3 million per house-hold.

The US veterans help land mine removal in Vietnam




HANOI, Vietnam (AP) - A U.S. veterans organization launched a $500,000 program Monday to remove landmines and unexploded bombs in central Vietnam, one of the most heavily bombed areas during the War.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which built the Washington, D.C., landmark, is backing Project RENEW, a two-year pilot program aimed at removing the war's deadly leftovers from Trieu Phong district in central Quang Tri province along the former demilitarized zone.

New York Life Int'l opens representative office in Hanoi



Ha Noi, Dec. 4 (VNA) -- A US insurance company, New York Life International Inc., has opened its representative office in Ha Noi to explore market demand and promote investment in trade activities.

Addressing the inauguration ceremony on Dec. 1, Chairman and General Director of the company, Gary G. Benanav, said that it was the beginning of his company's long-term commitment to the country.

OPIC loans to build medical plant in Southern provinces



Ha Noi, Dec. 4 (VNA) -- The U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corp. (OPIC) has pledged a USD 8 million loan to build a serum and medicine production plant at the Bien Hoa 2 Industrial Zone in southern Dong Nai province.

The pledge was signed in Ho Chi Minh City on Dec. 3 by OPIC Chairman and Executive Manager George Munoz, who led a mission of US businessmen assessing investment possibilities in Viet Nam.

It is the second OPIC-assisted project in Viet Nam.

Near 2 million foreign tourists come to Vietnam in 11months


Ha Noi, Dec. 2 (VNA) -- Viet Nam welcomed about 1.945 million foreign tourists in the first 11 months of this year, a year-on-year increase of 19.5 percent, says the Viet Nam Tourism Administration (VTA).

The tourism sector also held tours for about 10.9 million domestic tourists in the same period, a yearly increase of 6 percent. Therefore, the sector's total turnover increased 14.1 percent to VND 8,250 billion (USD 590 million).

US assists research on environment in Ho Chi Minh city



Ha Noi, Nov. 30 (VNA) -- The U.S. Government has given Ho Chi Minh City equipment to analyse dust in the air worth USD 10,000.

The equipment was presented to the city's Science, Technology and Environment Service by the U.S. Consulate General, the U.S. Agency for Environmental Protection and the California Natural Resources Office on Nov. 30.

The donation was part of the U.S.-Asia Environment Programme (U.S.-AEP).
