On July 19th, 2006, newly-elected President Nguyen Minh Triet and Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung sent a message of thanks in response to President Bush's congratulatory letter to them on the occasion of their election.

The proposal was submitted by representatives of municipal and provincial Catholics in the north at their first conference in Hanoi on July 19.

ASEAN Washington Committee voiced Their Support for Vietnam - U.S. PNTR

In a letter sent to U.S. Scretary of State Condoleezza Rice on July 7th, the ASEAN Washington Committee (AWC) has showed their support for Vietnam - U.S. Permanent Normal Trade Relations. The Indonesian Ambassador to the United States and AWC chairman Sudjadnan Pamohadiningrat urged for top level suppport from the U.S. Administration to ensure an ealiest possible extension PNTR to Vietnam.

Vietnam and the US have been making great strides toward conciliation and multi-sectoral co-operation, said Vietnamese Ambassador to the US Nguyen Tam Chien on July 12.

FM Spokesman highlights Vietnam-US ties' positive trend

The spokesman of the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on July 13 highlighted the positive growth tendency in the relationship between Vietnam and the US.

"The fact that Vietnam and the US officially signed a bilateral negotiation agreement for the former to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and the US Congress is considering granting permanent normal trade relations or PNTR status to Vietnam , shows a positive trend in Vietnam-US ties," spokesman Le Dung told a regular press briefing in Hanoi.
