Mr Ballmer, who paid a one-day visit to Vietnam on May 21, made the statement during talks with Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung in Hanoi. He spoke highly of Vietnam’s impressive economic growth as well as the potential for developing information technology.

Mr Dung welcomed Mr Ballmer’s first visit to Vietnam, which he said would help further strengthen cooperation between the giant and relevant Vietnamese agencies in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector.

The signing of the agreement showed Vietnam’s strong commitments to protecting intellectual property rights and its desire to develop the long-term cooperation with the corporation in line with its commitments to the World trade Organisation and the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement, said Nguyen Tan Dung.

He thanked the giant for its effective cooperation with Vietnam in recent times, particularly after chairman Bill Gates’ visit last year.

Vietnam gives top priority to developing education and training and science and technology, and software technology will give the country a big advantage in developing the ICT sector, said the Prime Minister.

He proposed that Microsoft Corporation further help Vietnam with IT training programmes in all 64 cities and provinces, and FPT university with a software engineer training programme as well as the establishment of the corporation’s global service centre in Vietnam.

After the talks, host and guest witnessed the signing of an agreement on the strategic partnership between the Ministry of Post and Telematics and Microsoft Corporation to develop Vietnam’s ICT sector. As part of the agreement, the Vietnamese Government will purchase the corporation’s licensed computer software for all State agencies.

Mr Dung said the signing of the agreement showed Vietnam’s strong commitments to protecting intellectual property rights and its desire to develop the long-term cooperation with the corporation in line with its commitments to the World trade Organisation and the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement.
