Fact sheet 1: Some general information on religious freedom in Vietnam:

On February 13, 2001, the US Commission on International Religious Freedom will hold a hearing about religious freedom in Vietnam. To help the American people get a balanced view on religious freedom in Vietnam, the Embassy of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam would like to provide you with some facts and positive developments on this much-concerned area.


Vietnam is a multi-religious State with all the major international religions e.g. Buddhism, Catholicism, Protestantism, Muslim etc., and several local sects like Cao Daism and Hoa Hao. The Constitution and the law of Vietnam guarantee religious freedom. Religious belief is a recognized spiritual need of a part of the population and religious freedom is an integral part of the State
