Peace village built with US NGO' assistance



Ha Noi, Feb. 22 (VNA) -- Construction work for a Peace Village for the poor and war victims was started in Dong Ha, chief town of the central province of Quang Tri, with aid from Earth Steward Network, U.S. non-government organization.

The U.S. NGO has set up the Peace Trees Viet Nam project to help the war victims in Viet Nam.

The ground-breaking ceremony was attended by representatives from other international organisations and NGOs.

The nine-ha village is being built on a 13-ha area where unexploded ordnance have been cleared. To the construction cost of VND 4.3 billion (USD 300,000), the Peace Trees Viet Nam provides VND 3 billion and Quang Tri province, VND 1.3 billion.

Having good infrastructure facilities including power and water supply systems, the village contains a creche, a conference hall and houses for 135 families. It is scheduled to be completed and put into use by the end of 2002.--VNA
