More Room to Grow for Vietnam-US Ties: US diplomat
The US Ambassador to the UN John Bolton has said he is optimistic about the relationship between Vietnam and the US, and the two countries can expand relations to other fields besides trade.
In a recent interview with the Vietnam News Agency, Bolton said that apart from commercial ties, there are other ties that the two countries would like to pursue.
The US wanted closer cooperation with Vietnam on the proliferation security initiatives intended to stop the international trafficking of weapons of mass destruction materials, he said.
He expressed hope for greater cooperation between the two sides on the global war on terrorism.
He also said that the future was likely to bring improved relations between Vietnam and the US.
Regarding the US stance on Vietnam's bid for non-permanent membership in the UN Security Council for the 2008-2009 tenure, Bolton said that historically, the US never publicly announces intentions in Security Council voting.
