Inaugurated Friday, the Cua Van centre, built in a lagoon near the Van estuary, exhibits traditional customs and festivals and songs of local fishing communities and is part of a project sponsored by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Ha Long Bay, in the northern part of the Gulf of Tonkin, is dotted with islands characterized by unusual limestone formations. In 1994 these islands were designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The project personnel took three years to sift through and choose the more than 100 exhibits on display, an official said.

The center is expected to be a major tourist attraction.
