Vietnam forest coverage reaches 33,2 per cent




Ha Noi, Jan. 8 (VNA) -- Viet Nam now has 10,915,592 ha of forest or coverage of 33.2 percent, a national forests survey shows.

The country has replanted 1,491,394 ha, including more than 250,000 ha in 2000, the second year of its programme to plant 5 million ha of forest by 2010.

The Central Highlands has the largest forest acreage - 2,373,116 ha or coverage of 53.2 percent. The region has in recent years replanted 33,949 ha.

The north-eastern region has the second highest coverage-35.1 percent-with 2,368,982 ha under forest, including 478,387 planted hectares.

Viet Nam plans to grow 220,000 more ha of forest this year, bringing forest coverage to 34 percent.

The country's programme to plant 5-million ha by 2010 will give it 14 million ha coverage of 43 percent.--VNA
