LIVESTOCK BREEDING GROWS IN 2000


Ha Noi, Jan. 1 (VNA) -- Viet Nam had 4.15 million cows, 320,000 million milch cows, 2.95 million buffaloes, 19.54 million pigs and 189.2 million heads of poultry this year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reports.

The country's cow herbs and milch cow increased two percent and more than 10 percent, respectively, over 1999 while that of buffaloes saw a year-on-year increase of 0.34 percent.

Meanwhile, pig and poultry numbers saw year-on-year increases of 3.5 percent and 6.3 percent, respectively.

More than 200,000 cows were raised in the central provinces of central Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai and the central highlands provinces of Gia Lai and Binh Dinh.

Viet Nam now has 109 animal fodder processing factories, including seven wholly foreign-invested and joint venture companies, turning out 2.5 million tonnes of fodder this year, or a year-on-year increase of 25 percent.--VNA
