FM seeks early ratification of Vietnam-US trade agreement




Ha Noi, Jan. 17 (VNA) -- Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien would like the U.S. Congress to make further contributions to improving relations between Viet Nam and the U.S. - especially by ratifying the Bilateral Trade Agreement, BTA, signed last July.

The Foreign Minister was speaking about the efforts by the Congress to boost relations between the two countries while receiving a visiting House of Representatives delegation in Ha Noi on Jan. 16. The delegation is led by Democratic Party leader Richard Gerphardt.

Renovating monetary policy is the most important factor




Ha Noi, Jan. 16 (VNA) -- Finance Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung described 2001 as a year for Viet Nam to focus on monetary policy reforms so as to help effect active changes in the financial sector.

"2001 must be a year in which Viet Nam will renew its monetary policy, regarding it as a breakthrough," Hung told Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper in a recent interview.

Amb. Peterson continues his term in Vietnam




Ha Noi, Jan. 16 (VNA) -- The first U.S. Ambassador to Viet Nam, Pete Peterson, had made active contributions to the normalisation of Viet Nam-U.S. relations, including the signing of the Bilateral Trade Agreement, says Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Phan Thuy Thanh.

Ms.Thanh made her assessment while answering a question from the Viet Nam-based DPA correspondent about Peterson's role in the improvement of Viet Nam-U.S. relations in Ha Noi on Jan. 16.

Vietnam attaches importance to relations with the US




Ha Noi, Jan. 16 (VNA) -- Viet Nam attached importance to its relationship with the United States, National Assembly Chairman Nong Duc Manh told a visiting U.S. House of Representatives delegation led by Democratic Party leader Richard Gerphardt, in Ha Noi on Jan. 16.

Mr. Manh said that Viet Nam had persistently implemented its policy of peace, friendship and cooperation with all countries on the basis of respecting each other's independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, equality and to their mutual benefit.

Vietnam affirmed its support for one China policy




Ha Noi, Jan. 15 (VNA) -- Member of the Standing Board of the Viet Nam Communist Party's (CPV) Political Bureau Pham The Duyet has reaffirmed Viet Nam's support for the Chinese Party and State's principled one-China policy.

Duyet, who is also President of the Presidium of the Viet Nam Fatherland Front (VFF) Central Committee, reaffirmed the support during a meeting with Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Hu Yingdong, in Ha Noi on Jan. 15.

Better use of Vietnam-China border bridge




Ha Noi, Jan. 15 (VNA) -- The Prime Minister has entrusted the Transport Ministry to strengthen the management of and better exploit a border bridge across the Nam Thi river linking Viet Nam's Lao Cai border area and Hokou area of Yunnan province (China).

The Prime Minister also entrusted relevant ministries, agencies and localities to sign agreements on operation of the border bridge with authorised agencies of China.

The PM's decision is aimed to boost economic exchange between the two border areas.

More equitised state owned enterprises in Ho Chi Minh city



Jan. 15 (VNA) -- Ho Chi Minh City equitised 22 more State-owned enterprises (SOEs) in 2000, bringing the total number of equitised SOEs in the city to 64.

Eighteen of these enterprises had a total capital of VND 205.913 billion owned by the State, a total registered capital of VND 207.765 billion, and mobilized a further VND 17.663. They refunded VND 126.326 billion to the State Budget right after their equitisation.

Vietnam and Russia boost fisheries cooperation





Ha Noi, Jan. 11 (VNA) -- Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam received in Ha Noi on Jan. 11 I. P. Sinelnik, Chairman of the Fisheries Committee of the Russian Federation, currently on a visit to Viet Nam.

Mr. Cam described the visit as a contribution to boosting cooperation in fisheries between the two countries.

Japanese Justice Minister visits Vietnam


Ha Noi, Jan. 11 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's Justice Minister Nguyen Dinh Loc and his Japanese counterpart, Masahiko Komura, have discussed broadening co-operation between the two countries.

Mr. Loc and Mr.Komura, who began a three-day visit to Viet nam on Jan. 10, spoke highly of the active and effective cooperation between Viet Nam and Japan in the recent past and agreed to develop their bilateral ties to a new dimension, thus contributing to a closer friendship and better understanding between the two countries.

Jobs to be created for 1,4 million people in 2001




Ha Noi, Jan. 11 (VNA) -- Jobs will be created for 1.4 million people in 2001, reported the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs at a conference to review its work in 2000 and launch the tasks for 2001.
