Vietnam welcomes the approval by the US Congress of the bill to extend Permanent Normal Trade Relations (PNTR) to Vietnam. This represents an important step that helps promote the relationship between Vietnam and the US, meeting the expectation of the two peoples.

Statement by the Vietnamese Embassy on Thuong Nguyen Cuc Foshee case

In response to questions from news agencies relating to the arrest of U.S. citizen Thuong Nguyen Foshee, the spokesman for the Embassy of Vietnam in Washington DC said:

Thuong Nguyen Foshee was arrested and charged with conducting terrorist activities in Vietnam at the order of Nguyen Huu Chanh, head of so called "Revolutionary Government of Free Vietnam", a terrorist group of which Foshee is a member. This group launched bomb attacks at Vietnamese embassies in Manila and Bangkok.

US, Vietnam discuss religious situation

Visiting US ambassador-at-large for international religious liberty, John Hanford, discussed Vietnam’s religious situation during a meeting Thursday with Deputy PM Pham Gia Khiem.

Hanford, who visited Vietnam on August 15-18 to study the religious situation here, stressed that the two countries should continue negotiations on this issue as well as others to boost bilateral cooperation.

Khiem agreed saying that negotiations to resolve differences over religion and other issues should continue to avoid adverse effects on bilateral relations.

US Secretary of State to visit Vietnam in late July

US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will visit Vietnam late this month, said Foreign Ministry Spokesman Le Dung on July 13.Rice.bmp

Ms Rice's visit is expected to take place after she attends the 39th ASEAN Foreign Ministerial Meeting (AMM) and the 13th ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF), to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from July 24-28, spokesman Dung said.
