Prime Minister Phan Van Khai visits Finland

VNA Sept. 23 -- Prime Minister Phan Van Khai arrived in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, at 9:15 am (local time) today (Sept. 23), starting the second leg of his tour of four Scandinavian countries after a three-day visit to Sweden from Sept. 20.

The Vietnamese Prime Minister paid a courtesy visit to Finnish President Martti Ahtisaati, to whom he spoke highly of Finland's role and position in Europe and the world. PM Khai also praised the Finnish President's effective contributions to strengthening peace, friendship and cooperation among nations.

Prime Minister Phan Van Khai's activities during final day of 7th apec summit

Ha Noi, Sept. 13 (VNA) -- Prime Minister Phan Van Khai attended meeting sessions and met with Prime Minister Jenny Shipley of New Zealand and other leaders during the final day of the 7th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit in Auckland, New Zealand, on Sept. 13.

Speaking to the New Zealand PM, the Vietnamese PM expressed thanks to her country for extending hospitality to the Vietnamese delegation and spoke highly of New Zealand's efforts for the success of the Summit.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam at APEC Ministerial Meeting

Nhan Dan Sep.11--Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cam and some other Vietnamese senior officials attended the 11th Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum ministerial meeting, which was held on September 9-10 in Auckland, New Zealand to discuss issues of mutual concern in the APEC framework and to prepare for the seventh APEC summit.

US Secretary of State Madeline Albright Visits Vietnam

US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright arrived in Hanoi on September 6 to begin a two-day visit Vietnam.

Ms. Albright paid courtesy visits to General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Le Kha Phieu and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, and had talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cam.

At the meetings, Vietnam and the US exchanged views on bilateral relations and on regional and international issues of common concern.

US Senate Delegation Visits Vietnam

A US Senate delegation head by Senator Richard Shelby, Chairman of the US Senate Select Committee for Intelligence, visited Vietnam from Aug. 28-31, 1999. The US Senate delegation was received by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minsister Nguyen Manh Cam, Defence Minister Pham Van Tra.

Five-day Working Week from October

Nhan Dan Aug 29--The Government has decided to carry out a five-day working week, starting from October 2 with two days off.

If a holiday coincides with Saturday or Sunday, administrative employees will have the following day off.

Beneficiaries are cadres, civil servants and people working in the administrative offices and socio-political organisations of the State.

If any departments of education and health sectors face difficulties, a six-day working week system will be still implemented until the first day of the year 2000.

Malaysia's construction of some projects on the En Ca area belonging to the Truong Sa archipelago

Nhandan Aug. 26 --Vietnam has sufficient historical and legal evidences to prove its indisputable sovereignty over the Hoang Sa (Paracels) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes, reiterated a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry in Hanoi on August 25.

The spokesperson affirmed Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagoes while answering a Vietnam News Agency correspondent's question on Vietnam's viewpoint on Malaysia's construction of some projects on the En Ca area belonging to the Truong Sa archipelago.

US Consulate General in Ho Chi Minh City

VNA Ha Noi, Aug. 16 -- The US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City opened the American official consulate at No. 4, Le Duan str., today, Aug. 16.

The opening ceremony was attended by US Ambassador to Viet Nam Pete Peterson, and US Assistant Secretary of State Mary Ryan, and US Senator Charles T. Hagel, US Consul General Charles Ray and other foreign Consuls General in Ho Chi Minh City.
