Press Communique on the Opening Session of IX Party Congress



Ha Noi, April 19 (VNA) -- The ninth National Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam officially opened at the Ba Dinh Hall in Ha Noi today, on April 19, 2001.

Attending the Congress are 1,168 delegates (two absent for health conditions) from 70 delegations of 61 cities and provinces as well as central-level Party organizations, representing nearly 2.5 million Party members across the country.

Ninth National Congress of CPV to open Apr. 19



Ha Noi, April 18 (VNA) -- The ninth National Representatives Congress of the Communist Party of Viet Nam, CPV, will open tomorrow, Apr. 19, morning at Ha Noi's Ba Dinh Hall.

The announcement was made by Head of the CPV Central Committee's Commission for Ideology and Culture Huu Tho, also spokesman of the congress, at a press briefing held in Ha Noi this morning.

Fisheries sector in Vietnam's economy




Ha Noi, Apr. 18 (VNA) -- The fisheries sector netted nearly 500,000 tonnes of aquatic products in the first quarter of this year, earning USD 289 million or a 36 percent year-on-year increase, according to the Ministry of Fisheries.

Of the netting volume, the natural catch output was more than 328,000 tonnes and aquaculture output was almost 168,000 tonnes.

Ten year development of Vietnam's foreign trade



HA Noi, April 18 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's foreign trade volume reached USD 29.5 billion last year, marking a 6.5-fold increase over 1989, while its annual import-export volume mounted to USD 14.3 billion in 1990-2000, or a 2.5-fold rise compared to the 1981-1990 figure, and the number of businesses involved in the import-export sector rose from 270 in 1990 to more than 10,000 at present.

6.1million jobs created in 1996-2000



Ha Noi, April 18 (VNA) -- Viet Nam generated 6.1 million jobs in the 1996-2000 period.

In 2000, unemployment rate among urban people stood at 6.44 percent, the rate of working hours in rural areas rose to 73.86 percent from 72.11 percent in 1996 and the rate of trained workers increased to 22 percent from 10 percent in 1996.

These achievements were attributable to the renovation policy which opened ways for more investment capital sources for job generation, and to programmes for providing direct support to workhands.
