Vietnam putting aside the past, looking foward the future

Hanoi, Mar. 13 (VNA) -- "We advocate putting aside the past and looking toward the future for joint development cooperation in our relations with the United States as well as with other countries that once were hostile to Vietnam," the spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry said in Hanoi on Mar. 13.

Phan Thuy Thanh was answering a foreign correspondents' question on Vietnam's reaction to US Defense Secretary William Cohen's statement in Hong Kong on Mar. 12 that he would make no apologies for the war in Vietnam during his visit to the country.

US Defense Secretary's visit to Vietnam

Hanoi, Mar. 13 (VNA) -- Defense Secretary of the United States William Cohen arrived in Hanoi this morning, March 13, beginning a three-day official visit to Vietnam which extends from March 13-15. He was accompanied by other senior officers and US Ambassador to Vietnam Douglas Peterson.

He was welcomed at the Defence Ministry's Guest House by Vietnamese Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen. Pham Van Tra, Deputy Defence Minister Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Huy Hieu, and other senior officers. Right after the welcoming ceremony, Pham Van Tra and William Cohen held talks.

Vietnam Pushes Trade Deal with US

National Assembly Chairman Nong Duc Manh and Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam held separate talks with members of a visiting delegation from the US House of Representatives on February 23, saying that Vietnam always wanted to speed up negotiations for a trade agreement with the US.

US Secretary of State Madeline Albright Visits Vietnam

US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright arrived in Hanoi on September 6 to begin a two-day visit Vietnam.

Ms. Albright paid courtesy visits to General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Le Kha Phieu and Prime Minister Phan Van Khai, and had talks with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cam.

At the meetings, Vietnam and the US exchanged views on bilateral relations and on regional and international issues of common concern.

US Senate Delegation Visits Vietnam

A US Senate delegation head by Senator Richard Shelby, Chairman of the US Senate Select Committee for Intelligence, visited Vietnam from Aug. 28-31, 1999. The US Senate delegation was received by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minsister Nguyen Manh Cam, Defence Minister Pham Van Tra.
