Vietnam, US enhance relationship

(VNA) A senior delegation from the Vietnamese Government, headed up by Deputy Prime Minister Vu Van Ninh, paid an official visit to the US from Feb. 7-11.

While in Washington , Deputy PM Ninh met separately with President pro-tempore of the US Senate Daniel Inouye, Senator Jim Webb, US Secretary of Commerce John Bryson, US Trade Representative Ron Kirk, World Bank (WB) President Robert Zoellick and Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Naoyuki Shinohara.

US Assistant Secretary of State visits VN

(VNA) The US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Kurt Campbell, had a meeting with a number of Vietnamese officials in Hanoi on Feb. 2 as part of his visit to Vietnam .

He met with Minister-Chairman of the Government Office Vu Duc Dam, Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang, Deputy Defence Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen. Nguyen Chi Vinh, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Luong Minh, and Deputy Director of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Affairs Vuong Thua Phong.

Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh and Defence Minister Phung Quang Thanh on Jan. 19 hosted receptions in Hanoi for a visiting US delegation led by Senator John McCain.

(VNA) Dung hailed Robert Filner’s efforts in supporting Agent Orange victims as well as his close cooperation with Vietnamese associates in dealing with AO/dioxin consequences.

The PM also highly valued Filner and his colleagues’ endeavours to bring the issue of AO/dioxin to hearings at the US House of Representatives and Senate, thus helping the US Congress, government and people understand more about the impacts and consequences of AO/dioxin in Vietnam .

U.S. trade policy plays role in Vietnam’s economic reforms

A quarter century after Vietnam reformed from a centrally planned into a market-oriented economy, two recent events have pointed to the pitfalls of global market integration. First, after two decades of rapid economic growth, inflation began to rise above 10%. Second, as Vietnam’s ambassador to Washington, Nguyen Quoc Cuong, said, “The global economic crisis has presented real challenges to our growth model as it highlighted a number of weaknesses of our economy.”

VN pledges improved conditions for US business

(VNA) The Vietnamese Government will improve investment environment and create favourable conditions for foreign businesses, including those from the US, to operate in the country while strictly implementing commitments reached by the two sides.

The pledge was made by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung at a reception in Hanoi on Dec. 8 for a delegation of US businesses in Vietnam and guests who had engaged in the negotiations of the Vietnam-US Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), on the occasion of the 10 th anniversary of the signing.

Vietnam-US dialogue on human rights

(VNA) Vietnam and the US have held discussions on issues of common concern in an open, frank and in-depth manner during their recent human rights dialogue in Washington.
 
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Luong Thanh Nghi made this statement in Hanoi on Nov. 25 while answering reporters’ questions on the results of the 16 th Vietnam-US Human Rights Dialogue, which took place on Nov. 9-10.

VN, US hold annual labour dialogue

(VNA) A recent annual labour dialogue between Vietnam and the US has focused discussions on technical cooperation to improve labour relations.

The dialogue also discussed reforms in labour law and workers’ rights, as well as labour issues in the negotiations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement.

The participants reviewed the outcomes of the first phase of a 2.5 million USD project to boost labour relations funded by the US . They agreed that the project’s second phase will focus on improving capacity of labour inspectors.
