Crack down on drugs conducts nationwide



Ha Noi, Oct. 30 (VNA) -- A crack down on drugs will be conducted nationwide from today, Oct. 30, to Jan. 30, 2001 as announced at a conference held recently in Ha Noi by the Ministry of Public Security.

At the conference to review the country's fight against drugs in 2000 it was reported that anti-drug forces have so far this year detected nearly 9,000 drug-related cases involving 16,200 people.

They confiscated 50.46 kg of heroin, 455 kg of opium, more than 2,000 kg marijuana, 112,000 ampoules of habit-forming drugs and 6,700 tablets of other narcotic drugs.

The numbers of drug-related cases and criminals involved dropped from those detected in the first ten months of 1999 but the quantity of seized narcotics increased by 26.5 percent.

Also reported at the conference, more than 100,000 people nationwide were found addicted to drug with 1,600 being school pupils and university students.
