Viet Nam thanks the United Nations and its agencies


Oct. 24 (VNA) -- Viet Nam thanks the United Nations and its agencies for their close and effective cooperation in assisting Viet Nam's integration into the international community.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam told representatives of the UN agencies at a meeting in Ha Noi on Oct. 23 that the Vietnamese Government and people would continue the vigorious pursuit of the renovation process, aiming to make their ambitious modernization and industrialization programme a complete success.

Speaking at the meeting, which was held to celebrate the UN's 55th anniversary on October 24, the Deputy Prime Minister called on the UN organizations operating in Viet Nam to keep on baking the country's efforts to fufil its five-year socio-economic development plan for 2001-2005, and its 10-year socio-econoic development strategy till 2010.

Mr. Cam expressed Viet Nam's enthusiastic support for the current reforms within the UN system, saying these would ensure that the UN agencies operated more efficiently and effectively.

He also took the opportunity to thank the UN organizations for their quick and generous provision of emergency aid to flood victims in the Mekong delta.

UN Coordinator and UN Development Programme Country Representative Edouard Wattez told Deputy PM Cam that the UN organizations in Viet Nam wished to thank the Vietnamese Government for the support it offered them. He also highlighted Viet Nam's support for the UN at the international level.

He said the UN agencies would continue their efforts to assist Viet Nam in its hunger elimination and poverty reduction programmes.-
