Vietnam poverty classification levels adjusted



Ha Noi, Nov. 5 (VNA) -- The Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs (MoLISA) has announced adjustments to poverty classification levels for next year.

The levels will be increased by 1.5 times as from Jan. 1, 2001, under which households in mountainous and island areas with per-head monthly incomes lower than VND 80,000 (USD 5.7) will be classified as poor. The levels will be set at VND 100,000 (USD 7.1) for households in rural areas and VND 150,000 (USD 10.7) in urban areas.

Garment and textile industry export value this year



Ha Noi, Nov. 5 (VNA) -- The garment and textile industry will earn USD 1.9 billion from exports in 2000, an increase of 8.7 percent over 1999.

Exports to quota markets such as the European Union (EU), Canada and Turkey will contribute USD 720-730 million, or a year-on-year increase of 15 percent. This figure will amount to 39 percent of the industry's total export turnover. Meanwhile, exports to off-quota markets including Japan and the United States are expected to rise 17 percent over 1999.

Third round of talks on Vietnam -Cambodia border issue concludes


Ha Noi, Nov. 5 (VNA) -- The third round of negotiations on the border issue between Viet Nam and Cambodia ended in Ha Noi today, Nov. 5, after eight days' sitting.

The Vietnamese delegation to the Viet Nam-Cambodia Joint Committee on Border Affairs was led by Tran Cong Truc, Head of the Government Border Committee, and the Cambodian delegation, by Var Kim Hong, advisor to the Royal Government on Border Affairs.

The two sides reached important consensus on most of the issues raised for discussion.

Industrial sector increase in 10 months



Ha Noi, Nov. 5 (VNA)-- The national industrial production output recorded a year-on-year increase of 15.54 percent with the turnover of VND 165,944 billion (USD 11.85 billion) in the last 10 months.

The turnover represented an increase of at least 4.5 percent over the yearly target for 2000 of 9.5-11 percent set by the National Assembly.

Foreign Investors in Agricultural projects

*Agricultural Sector Draws in 340 FDI Projects

As many as 340 foreign-invested projects with a combined capital of USD 2,272 million have been granted licenses to operate in the agricultural sector since 1988 when the country's foreign investment law was promulgated.

The figures represent 12 percent of the country' licensed FDI projects and 6 percent in terms of investment capital.

President Tran Duc Luong thanks Christina Noble



Ha Noi, Nov. 6 (VNA) -- President Tran Duc Luong has formally thanked Christina Noble, a British citizen who founded the Christina Noble's Children Foundation (CNCF).

The President said Christina had helped hundreds of Vietnamese children and needy people overcome difficulties to integrate into the community or re-unite with their families.

"I commend her honourable work and hope that she will soon successfully realise more of her beautiful dreams," he said.

Development investment to rise by 16% in 2001


Ha Noi, Nov. 6 (VNA) -- Viet Nam will see its development investment rise by 16 percent in 2001 to make up nearly 29 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), reports the Ministry of Investment and Planning.

Domestic financial sources will contribute 65 percent, consisting of 21 percent from the State budget, 16 percent from State credits, 17.5 percent from the State-owned enterprises, and 25 percent from the population.

International terminal to be built at Tan Son Nhat Airport



Ha Noi, Nov. 3 (VNA) -- The Ministry of Planning and Investment has submitted a project to build an international terminal at Tan Son Nhat Airport to the Government for approval, according to the Viet Nam Civil Aviation Authority.

A feasibility study of the project was conducted with funds from Japan's Ministry of Transportation and Communication, by the Japanese Aviation Consultative Company and Southern Aviation Airports.

Construction of the four-floor terminal is scheduled to be completed by 2010, at a cost of USD 310 million.

Consultancy with Cuban Company for Ho Chi Minh Highway


Ha Noi, Nov. 3 (VNA) -- A supervising consultancy contract for the first phase of the Ho Chi Minh Highway construction project has been signed by the General Directors of the Ho Chi Minh Highway management board and the Cuban Quality Couriers International (QCI) Company.

Democracy may be exercised in different ways




Nov. 3 (VNA)-- Deputy Justice Minister Ha Hung Cuong rejected a stance putting a multi-party system as the symbol of democracy, saying there were different ways to the common goal of democracy.
