Vietnam attends ASEAN tourism conference




Ha Noi, Jan. 17 (VNA) -- A Viet Nam Tourism Administration (VTA) delegation led by VTA Deputy Director General Pham Tu attended the fourth conference of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) tourism officials held in Brunei from Jan. 9-16.

Participants appraised the achievements by ASEAN countries in the past year when ASEAN welcomed 37,534 million international visitors, 9.5 percent more than 1999.

Viet Nam achieved the highest increase -20 percent- or 2.13 million international tourists.

10,300 drug - related offences in 2000




Ha Noi, Jan. 17 (VNA) -- Viet Nam's authorised forces detected as many as 10,300 drug-related offences last year, arresting 19,500 offenders, according to the Anti-drug Office.

They seized 60 kgs of heroin, more than 560 kgs of opium, 2,200 kgs of marijuana and 119,460 ampoules of addictive drugs.

The Anti-drug Office said that the fight against drug-related criminals proved to be very complicated with drug traffickers using new forms of trafficking.

PARTY AND STATE APPRECIATE OIL AND GAS INDUSTRY'S ACHIEVEMENTS


Ha Noi, Jan. 17 (VNA) -- The State highly valued the achievements recorded by the oil and gas industry, said Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam.

Mr. Cam praised the results of the industry's operations at a conference held by the Viet Nam Oil and Gas Corporation (PetroVietnam) in Ha Noi on Jan. 16 to launch the industry's tasks in 2001.

He said that although the oil and gas industry is young, it has registered strong growth over the past 25 years.

Ha Noi, Jan. 17 (VNA) -- A number of internationally funded development projects for ethnic minority groups in mountainous provinces have successfully encouraged the local communities to contribute to socio-economic development in recent years.

The assessment was made at a review workshop held in the northern mountainous province of Thai Nguyen on Jan. 15-16 by the Commission for Nationalities and Mountainous Areas.

Ha Noi, Jan. 17 (VNA) -- Vice President Nguyen Thi Binh has praised Overseas Vietnamese initiatives and recommendations for national legal reform and economic development as "honest and valuable".

Madamn Binh was speaking while greeting more than 300 expatriates from 19 Vietnamese communities in Ho Chi Minh City on Jan. 17 for the traditional Lunar New Year festival.

Renovating monetary policy is the most important factor




Ha Noi, Jan. 16 (VNA) -- Finance Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung described 2001 as a year for Viet Nam to focus on monetary policy reforms so as to help effect active changes in the financial sector.

"2001 must be a year in which Viet Nam will renew its monetary policy, regarding it as a breakthrough," Hung told Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper in a recent interview.

Review the Child development project





Ha Noi, Jan. 16 (VNA) -- The rate of five-year-old children in poor, remote and mountainous areas going to school reached 72-99.7 percent thanks to the child development project in the 1996-2000 period.

The project was carried out in 44 districts of 30 provinces, said a conference to review the project held in Ha Noi on Jan. 15 by the Ministry of Education and Training's Pre-school Education Department.

Ha Noi opens first hospital specialising in treatment of cancer



Ha Noi, Jan. 15 (VNA) -- A hospital specialising in the treatment of tunors will open its doors to patients in Ha Noi tomorrow, Jan.16.

The hospital will be Viet Nam's second offering specialized tumor treatment, the other is in Ho Chi Minh City.

The hospital, in Thanh Nhan Road, the Hai Ba Trung precinct, was created by the opening of a tumor ward at the Hai Ba Trung hospital. It will help share the burden carried by the only Ha Noi-based institution specialising in cancer treatment for patients from northern Viet Nam, hospital K.
