Renovating monetary policy is the most important factor




Ha Noi, Jan. 16 (VNA) -- Finance Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung described 2001 as a year for Viet Nam to focus on monetary policy reforms so as to help effect active changes in the financial sector.

"2001 must be a year in which Viet Nam will renew its monetary policy, regarding it as a breakthrough," Hung told Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper in a recent interview.

Better use of Vietnam-China border bridge




Ha Noi, Jan. 15 (VNA) -- The Prime Minister has entrusted the Transport Ministry to strengthen the management of and better exploit a border bridge across the Nam Thi river linking Viet Nam's Lao Cai border area and Hokou area of Yunnan province (China).

The Prime Minister also entrusted relevant ministries, agencies and localities to sign agreements on operation of the border bridge with authorised agencies of China.

The PM's decision is aimed to boost economic exchange between the two border areas.

More equitised state owned enterprises in Ho Chi Minh city



Jan. 15 (VNA) -- Ho Chi Minh City equitised 22 more State-owned enterprises (SOEs) in 2000, bringing the total number of equitised SOEs in the city to 64.

Eighteen of these enterprises had a total capital of VND 205.913 billion owned by the State, a total registered capital of VND 207.765 billion, and mobilized a further VND 17.663. They refunded VND 126.326 billion to the State Budget right after their equitisation.

Jobs to be created for 1,4 million people in 2001




Ha Noi, Jan. 11 (VNA) -- Jobs will be created for 1.4 million people in 2001, reported the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs at a conference to review its work in 2000 and launch the tasks for 2001.

Vietnam's pepper export in 2000



Ha Noi, Jan. 10 (VNA) -- Viet Nam was the world's third producer of pepper and earned more than USD 140 million from exporting 36,000 tonnes in 2000.

General Statistics Office figures show that the pepper was exported to 30 countries and territories and the major importers were Singapore, the Netherlands, China and the U.S.

The exports totalled almost 16 percent of world supply after India and Indonesia.

Forest products processing to become active


Ha Noi, Jan. 10 (VNA) -- The Forestry Corporation is set to develop the forest product processing industry into an economic spearhead in the coming years.

The corporation will not only invest in producing chipboard and furniture and processing forest products for domestic use and export but also develop tourism, machinery manufacture and other services.

The corporation plans to earn an export turnover of USD 100 million between 2001 and 2005.

Conference on quality and food safety of aquatic products



Ha Noi. Jan. 9 (VNA) -- The Fisheries Ministry held the third conference on quality and food safety of aquatic products in Ha Noi on Jan. 9.

Representatives from aquatic processing enterprises and relevant agencies nationwide reviewed their work between 1996 and 2000, and worked out a plan of action from now to 2005 to improve the competitiveness of Viet Nam's aquatic products in the world market.

Vietnam Airline activities in 2000



Ha Noi, Jan. 9 (VNA) -- Vietnam Airlines - the national flag carrier - last year transported nearly three million passengers and more than 45,500 tonnes of cargo, a year-on-year rise of 11 percent and 15 percent respectively, an official of the Airlines said.

The official said Vietnam Airlines gained a share of about 40 percent of international air transport in the country and brought the rate of seat occupancy to 74.63 percent for the whole year. In addition, it provided supplies and services for about 14,540 flights operated by foreign airlines.

Temporary customs regulation on goods declaration procedure


Ha Noi, Jan. 9 (VNA) -- The General Department of Customs has issued a temporary regulation guiding importers and exporters to register a single declaration form of goods when going through customs procedure.

Under Decision No. 01/2001 QD-TCHQ issued on Jan. 3, 2001, subject to this new procedure are goods free or exempt from import and export duties, and goods with zero-percent duty rate.

The regulation takes effect 15 days after its signing and will be terminated when the Government changes policies on import-export management and taxes.--VNA

Pharmaceutical sector in Vietnam



Ha Noi, Jan. 7 (VNA) -- Viet Nam will invest more than USD 1,483 million to develop its pharmaceutical sector between 2001 and 2010.

Of this, USD 1,286 million will go to the pharmaceutical industry and USD 62.4 million will be used for pharmaceutical materials.
